Wordsworth Academy, an Approved Private School (APS), serves students ages 5 through 21 who have had difficulty achieving in a traditional classroom setting. The APS offers small class size and an array of specialized support services which enhance the learning experience and produce positive outcomes for students.
In addition to our academic focus, Wordsworth recognizes that learning social skills is important for students. As such, we include a variety of social and recreational activities in each student’s schedule throughout the school year. Our program integrates the Pennsylvania State Standards and an intensive focus on the social and emotional needs of every student. Wordsworth also offers a wide-ranging vocational program to help students plan for their future. Our vocational classes include: Industrial Technology, Light Construction, Horticulture/Landscaping, Multi-Media Design and Culinary Arts. Students also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on training in hospitality, maintenance, child care, fitness, healthcare and retail.
At the elementary level, students are exposed to different careers through their classroom instruction in the form of research projects and by using a web-based career inventory program (Bridges.com). Once a student reaches age 14, Wordsworth conducts a comprehensive assessment to determine the best path for each student in planning a career after graduation.
Throughout the high school experience, students have the opportunity to learn how to develop a resume, complete college and/or employment applications and enhance their interviewing skills by participating in mock interviews. Exposure to post-secondary opportunities often increases academic performance and further encourages positive behavior.
