Approved Private School |
Wordsworth’s Fort Washington Approved Private School (FWAPS) recognizes its place and responsibility in the continuum of care to children and their families. The FWAPS provides a high quality educational experience for students having a variety of challenging behavioral, emotional and educational needs. The school provides a safe, therapeutic environment offering small classes in homogeneous groupings creating a learning environment which encourages greater student involvement in the educational process. Supportive services are also provided to further enhance each student’s experience including: group and individual counseling, therapeutic time-out services, case-management services as needed, along with exposure to behavior modification based rewards system. Older students have the opportunity to benefit from our pre-vocational evaluation, counseling and vocational exploration program in preparation for the transition to their post-school adult lives.
Wordsworth Fort Washington is designated as an Approved Private School by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (DOE). Students entering the FWAPS must be referred by their local school district and then approved by the Pennsylvania DOE. Student referrals are received from over forty districts, and the majority of students stay with the FWAPS until the completion of their education.

Client Focus |
| The primary focus of the FWAPS is to enable each student to begin to experience educational success. The FWAPS employs a strengths based approach to working with students that focuses on helping each student identify, further develop and maximize his/her areas of strength rather than allowing them to dwell on failures. We believe that this philosophy helps students to best maximize their potential in the three typical areas of student needs: academics, behavioral and emotional functioning. |
Clinical and Education Professionals |
| Wordsworth’s FWAPS’s team of clinical professionals include Certified School Psychologists, Certified Counselors, Speech Therapists and Certified School Nurses whom are all experienced in meeting the needs of the special student population. The academic teachers are certified in Special Education and are supported by Teaching Assistants and Mental Health Workers. Staff are trained in de-escalation and crisis management strategies. The FWAPS also has Teachers in elective areas including: performing arts, home arts, arts and crafts, fine arts, and physical education. A Vocational Evaluator, Cooperative Education Specialist, and Pre-vocational Teachers are available to assist students with their transition planning needs. |
Family and School District Involvement |
| Both family members and the referring school district are considered to be an essential ingredient in providing effective and comprehensive services for our students. Their involvement and assistance is consistently encouraged both in terms of supporting problem solving efforts and in encouraging the maintenance of hard earned student gains. Transportation to the school is provided by the student’s school district. |
Wordsworth Commitment |
| The Fort Washington Approved Private School continues to enhance the continuum of care offered to its children and families. Wordsworth is confident that it can exceed the expectations of families and providers. Because Wordsworth continuously seeks ways of improving its programs, comments are welcome. |
