After School Program - A.S.S.U.R.E.

Wordsworth’s After School programs, After School Services Utilizing Recreation and Education (A.S.S.U.R.E.) is based upon providing quality programming combining effective educational, social, recreational, and nutritional supports to guide children in the elementary to junior high school levels towards productive adult lives. It provides a safe, engaging learning environment that encourages and inspires learning outside of the typical school day. Emphasis is placed upon preventive services that reduce or ameliorate the existence of high-risk behaviors that lead to drug addiction, crime, sexual health issues and pregnancy. Reduction of these core areas creates an environment wherein academic and social success becomes attainable. All of this is accomplished in a “fun and engaging” manner.

Client Focus

A.S.S.U.R.E.’s typical day programming includes several components which are designed to support the entire child. The educational component consists of academic enrichment in the core subjects (Math, English, and Science) as well as homework and tutorial assistance, to all children who participate in the program. This component integrates with the school curriculum, by use of books and materials provided by the school to prepare the students for the upcoming school day, and therefore consists of instruction driven by standards. Activities and games that build academic skills are also utilized. The goal of the educational component is to ensure academic promotion and timely progression so that social promotion and/or the likelihood of dropping out are reduced.
During the remaining sessions, the children have a choice from an array of enrichment and recreational activities. These include: Arts & Crafts, Dance, Computer, Photography, Group Counseling, Ceramics, Music and Fitness. On Fridays the children participate in assemblies and small group activities which address issues such as building self-confidence, making positive choices, violence prevention, dangers of drug and alcohol and conflict resolution. Sessions on other issues facing adolescents such as teen sexuality and HIV/AIDS are also addressed.

Education Professionals

The A.S.S.U.R.E. program staff includes a School Liaison, who oversees the daily operation of the program. The Liaison is also responsible for maintaining contact with the teachers and administrators of the school on a daily basis. Each activity is lead by a Senior Group Leader, Group Leader, or Certified Teacher.

Family Involvement
The Wordsworth A.S.S.U.R.E. program forges relationships with families by having a parent advisory board. This board works with the staff to oversee operations and make decisions concerning future class descriptions. The board serves as a liaison between the parents, school administration and A.S.S.U.R.E. administration.

Wordsworth Commitment
A.S.S.U.R.E. success hinges on being open to the community it serves and respectful to its members. Its design is in constant flux dependent upon the community through the children’s needs. Wordsworth is confident that it can meet the ongoing challenge that faces the communities we serve. Wordsworth is always welcome to suggestions as we strive to improve our programming.
