Strengthening families and helping children overcome emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges is our primary goal.

Our mission is to provide education, behavioral health, and child welfare services to children and youth experiencing emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges so that they are empowered to reach their potential and lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Founded in 1952 as The Matthews School, Wordsworth was focused originally on serving students with reading disabilities. The name and scope of services changed in 1965, and the organization has grown from serving 20 students to serving close to 5,000 children every year.

We provide caring and professional services in a variety of settings, and continue to grow and introduce new programming to meet the changing needs of the community. We use evidenced-based models and data to inform our continued development. We know that each child’s story is unique and we tailor our approach to individual needs.

Wordsworth partners with the Philadelphia School District, over 50 local school districts, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Community Behavioral Health, and the Philadelphia Department of Human Services to serve the needs of the Greater Philadelphia region.
