The Wordsworth Residential Treatment Program is located at 3905 Ford Rd. on the edge of Fairmount Park and just off of City Avenue . Wordsworth has a rich 57 year history of helping children and families in need to reach their potential and offers community child welfare, behavioral health and education programs in addition to RTP . In fact, children who are successfully discharged from our Residential program often receive appropriate continuing support through other Wordsworth services.

The Wordsworth Residential Program serves boys and girls, ages 10-21, who need the structure and security of a treatment program because of their serious emotional disturbances or because they are exhibiting aggressive, pre-delinquent behaviors. Many of our clients have a history of trauma because of neglect, sexual, physical or emotional abuse; with our support, many have been able to overcome their traumas and maximize their potential because of the safe and secure comprehensive treatment environment we provide.

The Wordsworth RTP provides all the amenities necessary to on-site living and we do everything we can to make our children feel at home. The residential living areas have recently been renovated and now have new bedroom furniture, comfortable TV rooms and activity-filled recreation spaces. Our facility includes a cafeteria where all meals and snacks are prepared, a computer lab, outdoor recreation space, access to an in-door gym, weight room, and movie theater rooms. The RTP is organized into four distinct therapeutic communities that are age and gender specific. The dynamic, multidisciplinary teams that staff each community are responsible for meeting the social, emotional and psychiatric needs of each child they serve. Each community team consists of one team leader, master-level therapists, two senior counselors, one case manager, a 1:6 staff to client ratio during awake hours, 2 full-time psychiatrists and 16 hours of nursing coverage per day.

A treatment plan is developed for each client upon admission which specifies the goals that are to be achieved. Individual, group and family therapies are available and designed to facilitate the development of insight, coping skills and improved interpersonal relationships resulting in lasting behavioral changes.

Therapists address the emotional/behavioral needs within a trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy format. Issues addressed in group and individual sessions often include anger management, drug and alcohol abuse, grief and loss, victim awareness, social skills, self-esteem, good decision-making. In addition to the more typical therapeutic modalities, the Wordsworth Residential Treatment Program has a very unique animal assisted therapy program where children can learn to be nurturing and kind to animals that may also have a history of abuse and neglect. Overall, the Wordsworth program is built on the core concepts of trauma-informed care, restraint avoidance/reduction and strength-based, positive behavioral interventions. While at the Wordsworth program, clients are educated in accordance with the Philadelphia School District schedule and curriculum in our STARS program located on-site. The education and residential programs are completed integrated and blended so that staff are able to get to know the complete child.

All Wordsworth staff are trained in Sanctuary, the trauma-informed treatment and organizational model, endorsed by the State of Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and nationally accepted as one of the most effective treatment models for working with children and adults with trauma history. Wordsworth is proud of its history and is committed to the future. It is our belief that every child is resilient and can overcome the challenges he/she faces with the support and attention of trained professional staff. We are committed to our mission that every child and family can reach their full potential!
