Harrisburg Educational Program

Wordsworth’s Harrisburg Educational Program recognizes its place and responsibility in the continuum of care to children and their families. The program provides a high quality educational experience for students having a variety of challenging behavioral, emotional and educational needs. The school provides a safe, therapeutic environment offering small class instruction in homogeneous student groupings. This structure creates a comfortable learning environment which encourages greater student involvement in the educational process. It is a “Rewards-Based” Program, built around positive reinforcement. The school’s stance is to be, “firm, honest and fair”, to each individual student. Supportive services are also provided to further enhance each student’s experience including: group and individual counseling, therapeutic time-out services and case management services as needed. Older students have the opportunity to benefit from our pre-vocational evaluation, counseling and vocational exploration program in preparation for the transition to their post-school adult lives.

Client Focus
The primary focus of the Wordsworth Harrisburg Program is to enable each student to begin to experience educational success. The program employs a strengths based approach to working with students that focuses on helping each student identify, further develop and maximize his/her areas of strength rather than allowing them to dwell on failures. We believe that this philosophy helps students to best maximize their potential in the three typical areas of student needs: academics, behavioral and emotional functioning.

Clinical & Educational Professionals

Wordsworth’s team of clinical professionals include Certified School Psychologists, Certified Counselors and a Certified School Nurse. All are experienced in meeting the needs of the special student population. The academic teachers are certified in Special Education and are supported by Teaching Assistants, Mental Health Technicians and an Education Specialist. Staff are trained in de-escalation and crisis management strategies. Certified staff must meet current standards as defined by State and Federal regulations. This includes meeting Act 48 Continuing Education requirements for which Wordsworth is an approved provider through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Family and School District Involvement

Both family members and the referring school district are considered to be an essential ingredient in providing effective and comprehensive services for our students. Their involvement and assistance is consistently encouraged both in terms of supporting problem solving efforts and in encouraging the maintenance of hard earned student gains.

Wordsworth Commitment

The Harrisburg Educational Program continues to enhance the continuum of care offered to its children and families. Wordsworth is confident that it can exceed the expectations of families and providers. Because Wordsworth continuously seeks ways of improving its programs, comments are welcome.
