Children Achieving Through Re-Education (CARE)
Wordsworth’s Children Achieving Through Re-Education (CARE) is a very unique and successful Program, borne out of collaboration between the School District of Philadelphia and the Behavioral Health System. The Program was developed to provide an alternative to traditional behavioral health rehabilitative services, which, for some children, have not been effective or successful in meeting the children’s needs. CARE is school-based and considers the family/caregiver, the community and the environment as critical participants in the success of the Program.
Client Focus
The CARE Program serves children in grades K - 8th. The Program runs 12 months of the year to insure that there is continuity and consistency. The classroom size is small, no more than 12 students per class.
The CARE Program is based on the teachings of Dr. Nicholas Hobbs, a developer of the ecological approach to serving children with emotional and behavioral problems. Each child functions in a unique world (an ecology specific to the child). Small changes in the child’s ecology in multiple locations (school, home and community) can have large effects on overall functioning. Children learn a new way to deal with their problems. By teaching the core CARE values of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness and caring, children learn to be not only part of a community but a positive influence within the community as well.
Ongoing daily monitoring of the child’s behaviors and periodic evaluations allow the staff to track progress. When deemed appropriate, the child “graduates” from the CARE Program and transitions back to his neighborhood school with the support of the CARE Transition Coordinator.

Clinical Professionals
The CARE Program staff includes a Clinical Manager, who oversees the daily operations of the Program. The CARE Coordinator is responsible for maintaining contact with family members/caregivers and any other agencies/organizations that are part of the student’s life. Clinicians develop and implement individualized treatment plans, structure the classroom schedule and activities and conduct individual and group therapy sessions. Each classroom is staffed by a Mental Health Clinician, a Certified Teacher (Teacher-Counselor), and a Behavioral Health Worker. The classroom staff provides education and ongoing treatment intervention as needed. A positive attitude is the basic premise on which all interventions are based. Psychiatrists provide clinical insight, treatment recommendations and support. The Psychiatrist also provides evaluations and medication management as needed.
